Urban Zen is an integrative therapy program dedicated to integrating eastern healing techniques with western medicine to treat clients, their loved ones and caregivers. Most sessions incorporate five healing modalities: Yoga Therapy (restorative poses, breath awareness, in-bed movement, and guided meditation), Reiki, Essential Oil Therapy, Contemplative Care, and Nutrition. UZITS (Urban Zen Integrative Therapists) are trained to address many symptoms or issues, including pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, constipation, and exhaustion. UZIT's, after in-depth training, must complete a minimum of fifty hours of clinical rotation to become certified. Although born in the hospital setting, Urban Zen is now incorporated in nursing curriculums, hospice and memory care facilities, schools, addiction rehab centers, prisons, cancer care centers, and more.
Sessions at the Shaw JCC will incorporate at least four of the main modalities. Participants will explore strategies to help the issues focused on. Essential Oils will be introduced in a safe manner. Mindful yoga movements are incorporated to address our focus with a particular strategy. Many restorative poses are then introduced along with the use of props (blocks, blankets). Breath awareness practices will guide participants to address their needs as will body awareness meditations. Normally your instructor will provide Reiki hands-on. To be pandemic friendly, participants will be guided to use certain hand positions on themselves for added comfort and relaxation. Your session will be led by Sigrid Stephens, a compassionate, 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher, Reiki therapist, and Urban Zen Integrative Therapist for 7 years, and a Registered Nurse in multiple roles/settings for over 40 years.
*Please bring your own mat. One may also be purchased at the JCC for a reasonable cost. The Shaw JCC will provide blocks and 2 blankets. However, if you would like to bring several of your own blankets for additional comfort or bolstering, please feel free to do so.
